Weekend and Mid-Week Escapes > Pedal Penticton and the Kettle Valley Trail

Pedal Penticton and the Kettle Valley Trail
Enjoy this day and half of self-guided cycling.
A journey amid the Okanagan Valley’s views and vineyards.

Explore the best of BC’s Okanagan Valley. Relax in the affordable comfort of a private room at Penticton’s HI hostel. Enjoy a day-and-a-half of cycling the Kettle Valley Trail. This former railway route is a wide trail passing by Ponderosa pine forests, orchards and vineyards. Take a break from cycling to sample some of the award-winning area wine. Take a refreshing dip at one of Penticton’s sandy beaches.
We provide quality bikes for your self-guided biking adventure. You’ll go at your own pace, with transportation assistance and resource material provided by our professional guides.

Activities:

Day 1 - After spending the night at the HI-Penticton hostel, you and your bike will be transported to Chute Lake, a high elevation mountain lake. From here, the trail descends at a slight 2.2% grade. No strenuous pedaling involved, you have the grade to your advantage. It's a sensory experience as the trail winds gently down the hillside...fragrant pines and sagebrush, morning songs from the birdlife, and spectacular views of the lake. You’ll pass by the mysterious rock ovens—stone igloos built by the railway construction crews 85 years ago. Stop for a sample at a local winery located near the trail.
Distance cycled is 42 km. on a 2.2% descent.

Day 2 - Cycle past the Okanagan Lake beach where the annual Ironman Canada Triathalon begins. Every August, 2,000 athletes from around the world swim four kilometres, cycle 180 km. and run 42 km.in a gruelling full day race. Stop to visit the S.S. Sicamous, the historic sternwheeler that once plied the waters of Okanagan Lake. Continue on the trail south of Penticton, along the shore of Skaha Lake. The pleasant level trail--sometimes shaded by silver-green Russian olive trees--is wedged between arid clay cliffs and the cattail marshes of Skaha Lake. After you arrive in the community of Okanagan Falls and take time to explore, you can pedal back to the HI Penticton Hostel via Eastside road, which skirts the east shore of Skaha Lake.
Distance cycled: 35 km., at level grade.
