THE GOLDEN MILE WALKABOUT
This tour explores the desert hillside
vistas of one of the finaest wine producing areas in Canada
called the Golden Mile. Along this route wineries such as
Burrowing Owl, Gerringer Brothers, and Hester Creek to name
a few have produced world-class wines and branded with this
spctactular landscape.
We will depart from Penticton to the town of
Oliver "the Wine Capital of Canada" arriving at
Tinhorn Creek Vineyards nestled in the hillside of a former
gold mining creek, and offers a truly unique wine experience.
The "Golden Mile" hiking trail (10 km and 2 km versions)
with stunning valley views which takes hikers past the Tinhorn
Creek gold mine ruins will provide close encounters with fruit
orchards and vineyards as well as outstanding vistas of Oliver
and the surrounding valley and mountains.
Many forms of wildlife may be seen along the
route. Deer, bears and even rattlesnakes. Along this old trail
are the remains of many abandoned mine shafts and fence lines.
A sign marks a 200 meter detour to the Stamp Mill ruins. At
the mill site are the remains of the stone walls that were
built over 100 years ago. This is a great place to have a
picnic and listen to the birds.
The last leg of the hike leads out to the foothills
behind the vineyards. The views here are fabulous! All of
the vineyards along the Golden Mile and across to the desert
lands along Black Sage Road are visible. Osoyoos is visible
in the south and Oliver to the north.
Our downhill walk through vineyards to visit
Gehringer Bros. and Hester Creek wineries. We will relax for
a while on the front deck of the winery building, taking in
the breathtaking panoramic views of the valley while enjoying
a taste of some of the valley's finest wine.
